The Prophet Jeremiah:

Finding Hope in the Face of Judgment

When was the last time you read the “weeping prophet”? God called Jeremiah to announce the death of Israel, its impending exile. With great anguish, he declared God’s word of judgment and endured persecution as a result. Among the figures of the Old Testament, he is one of the greatest embodiments of righteous suffering. His laments give us an inspired glimpse into a prophet’s struggles with doubt, fear, and disillusionment in the face of the Lord’s hard calling. But paradoxically, his weakness and suffering also gives us great grounds for hope.

Come and be amazed by how Jeremiah points us to Christ, the faithful “weeping prophet.” In this overview of the book of Jeremiah, we’ll see how the prophet’s words point us powerfully to the devastation of sin and beyond that to new life in covenant with God. There’s much strength, comfort, and instruction here for you as you persevere as a stranger and exile in the world.

Jesus defines a disciple as someone who hears his word, accepts it, and bears fruit. The Apostle James reminds us that we are to be doers of the word and not hearers only. If you want to hear the words of Jesus more clearly, accept them more heartily, and bear fruit more abundantly, then we have an opportunity for you.

In this class we will become a collaborative community reviewing that morning’s sermon, reminding ourselves of what else the Bible has to say in other places, and then arriving at concrete ways we can respond to what we have heard and learned.
